The YES Academy is Back in 2013!

This summer the YES Academy will take place in Suleimaniya from June 20 to June 30, 2013.

NEW! Rap/Spoken Word/BeatBoxing/DJing/MCing with Charyse Bailey of Mahogany Jones LIVE from Detroit!

NEW! BreakDance with Cricket from New York City: Cricket is one of the few b-boys who has been dancing on the streets of New York since the beginning of Hip Hop in the early 80′s

NEW! Classical Guitar with the amazing Susan McDonald from Austin, Texas

NEW! Hip Hop Graphics: Our first visual arts workshop with b-boy Cricket who is also an accomplished graphic artist and creator of comics and Japanese Manga

NEW! Conducting and YES Pro Orchestra with  Reuben Blundell conductor of the Hunter Symphony at Hunter College in  New York:  Conducting class and YES Pro Orchestra

NEW! Drama Workshop based on a production of Tom Stoppard’s 15-Minute Hamlet with Michael Parks Masterson

NEW! Suzuki and Roland Method Teacher Training with Dr. Greg Hurley: Learn to teach the Book 1 of Suzuki Method with Dr. Greg Hurley

Violin/Viola and Cello with Marc Thayer, Dr. Greg Hurley and Bruce Walker

Jazz and Rock bands with Dr. Gene Aitken

Piano with John Ferguson

Hip Hop Dance with Michael Parks

All classes are free. This program is a gift from the United States to the next generation of performing artists in Kurdistan and Iraq. 

We do not have dormitory rooms or meals this year. If you can commute to Suleimaniya daily, or stay with family or friends or provide hotel and meals for yourself, you are welcome to attend.

We expect over 200 participants and look forward to counting you among them.

All participants will have the opportunity to perform in our gala shows:

Guitar and Strings Gala :     June 28 featuring Susan McDonald, guitar and Reuben Blundell Conductor with the YES
Pro Orchestra

Jazz, Rock and Theater:      June  29 featuring Suli rock and jazz bands and a production of 15 Minute Hamlet

Unbreakable Hip Hop:         June 30 featuring Mahogany Jones Live (Rap, Vocals), Cricket (B-boying) and Michael
Parks (Hip Hop Dance) 

As we celebrate the seventh  year of the Academy, we would like to thank all those who make this possible: The Embassy of the United States in Baghdad, The Institute of Fine Arts in Suleimaniya, The Sinquefield Charitable Foundation, Friends of American Voices and  the Kurdistan Regional Government.
